Sorrel Sky Gallery hosts a one-man show featuring the soft, monochromatic paintings of Doyle Hostetler in Power and Beauty. Matthew Wong achieved resounding critical acclaim during his short six-year career, when he began painting and drawing in 2013, up until his death in 2019. The artist was known for his vibrant landscape paintings, often in abstracted styles, in a variety of mediums like oil, ink, watercolor and gouache. The Dallas Museum of Art is currently holding the first museum retrospective for the artist, featuring nearly 60 of Wong’s paintings, on view through February 5, 2023.…

Unlike his famed contemporary, John Singleton Copley (1738–1815), who was painting portraits of colonial luminaries in Boston, Ammi Phillips (1788-1865) painted the prosperous rural folk of western Massachusetts, Connecticut and New York. He painted perhaps thousands of portraits some being attributed to him only in recent years. His sitters considered their portraits to be status symbols. He advertised in a local newspaper that he produced “correct likenesses” with “perfect shadows and elegantly dressed in the prevailing fashions of the day.” To find clients he traveled extensively around the area in his 50-year career. The Metropolitan Museum of Art categorizes Phillips’ portrait Mrs. Mayer and Daughter, 1835-40, as folk art. Jenna Von Benedikt’s paintings capture the essence of Ethereal Summer, a joint show at Gallery Wild that opens on August 18. Von Benedikt grew up outside of London, where she worked at stables in return for riding lessons. When her family emigrated to Utah when she was 16 years old, her connection to living things only deepened. Her work often features crisply rendered “birds, beasts and bugs” against abstract impressionist backgrounds. “For me, it’s more about creating the atmosphere. The subject isn’t meant to capture a precise location,” says Von Benedikt. “It’s more about the feeling that subject gives as icons of nature, both symbolically and the important role they play [in nature]. I think we see ourselves in some of these creatures and feel an intrinsic connection to them.…

Deborah Lengel received an MFA from the University of South Carolina. Her art has been exhibited throughout the United States, Germany, Italy and France, and has been featured in the book Strokes of Genius 9 and twice in the exhibition ArtPrize in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and ArtFields in Lake City, South Carolina. Lengel has made art for decades. Reluctantly, in 2016, she had to take a prolonged break from her studio when she was diagnosed with multiple myeloma. It has been a journey for the artist. “I am in the process of ‘re-entering’ my life after a stem cell transplant in 2017 and then a broken femur, which left me out of commission for an extended period of time,” shares Lengel. “At present, I have been cancer-free for slightly over…

The still life paintings of Alexandra Averbach burst from the canvas. Characterized by crisp color and bright light against simplified backdrops, her artwork exudes life and exuberance, despite the inanimation of much of her subject matter. And even so, when Averbach captures items like teacups or bowls of fruit, often the items seem to be in midmotion, teetering on the edge of falling over, as if they have a life of their own. New works by Julian Rogers are showcased in an exhibition at Red Arrow Gallery in Nashville, Tennessee. Wave Upon Wave captures Rogers’ vivid, abstract oils of vaporous clouds reminiscent of “fantastical otherly-worlds” that “both soothe and captivate,” according to the gallery. In early 2020, San Francisco-based artist Justin Hess unveiled a bold new portrait of a confident and poised Black woman wearing a multi-colored jacket and standing in front of the U.S. Capitol building in Washington D.C. The painting, titled Looking to a Better Future, conveys an important message about the struggles of our current society and the future of our nation. “I’m personifying the future as an iconic woman, portrayed with confidence rather than defiance,” Hess explains. “She stands at the U.S. Capitol building with a rightful sense of ownership and equality. For the past 24 years, thousands of artists from around the globe have submitted their artwork in the Portrait Society of America’s International Portrait Competition with the hope of being selected as one of a handful of talented finalists. Art does not form in a vacuum. It is in and of the world, clanking around with everything it comes in contact with and reverberating through the artist, or from the artist to the artwork. When Roopa Dudley was young, she came across the book The Picture of Dorian Gray. A timeless classic, one particular quote of author Oscar Wilde’s resonated with her: “Every portrait that is painted with feeling is a portrait of the artist, not of the sitter. The sitter is merely the accident, the occasion. It is not he who is revealed by the painter; it is rather the painter who, on the coloured canvas, reveals himself.” That is what moves Dudley to paint portraits—the beauty she sees in her sitter’s eyes. The background is utilized by adding signs and symbols which add history and mystery to an otherwise ordinary portrait. Renee Brown often finds inspiration in the gentle tranquility of nature, especially birds. Growing up in a rural area, the artist found herself more emotionally connected to her surroundings, and this translated to a love of art—especially art that incorporates elements of nature. “The environments I paint reference how I’m feeling at that moment and my mental health,” Brown reflects. “My painting titled Guarded was created as a means for me to find peace, acceptance and tranquility. I’ve struggled with an eating disorder since childhood and this painting is a way to accept my truth and be open about it.” In the painting, a nude woman lays on a bed of grass in a fetal position as golden eagles surround her, close enough to count their feathers. “I went into…

Italian watercolorist Giovanni Cera paints the flora and botanicals of Mediterannea as well as European landscapes and cityscapes. In his scenes—some of which are created in ink—one might find a view of the twisting, undulating branches of a tree, groupings of plump fruits and vegetables atop white backgrounds or waves crashing against craggy shorelines. His watercolor Reflections depicts the Warmond canal in the Netherlands filled with lily pads. “The water is a mirror that makes dynamic, fantastic figures according to the laws of physics,” Cera says. A summer group show featuring the varied artworks of Hernan Murno, Amy Sabrin, Michelle Simoneau and Rosa Vera takes place at Richmond, Virginia-based nonprofit Artspace Gallery. These four artists create diverse abstract and semi-representational work springing from the same impulse: the landscape, whether the natural or built environment. On her daily meditative walks, Loren DiBenedetto often finds things to inspire her still life paintings. “I’m always inspired by nature,” she says. “The branch in Weeping Pine had broken off and was just dancing in the tree. I knew I had to paint it. When I got back to my studio I looked for a vase I could put it in, thinking I would use a clear one. For the month of August, 33 Contemporary Gallery, located on the fourth floor of the Zhou B Art Center in Chicago, will feature the new, emotionally driven series by Junyi Liu titled Killing Me Softly. The artist presents a unique look at what it’s like to exist in a toxic relationship, a theme that hits close to home for Liu, as it does for many others. Peter Swift’s work combines two distinct elements: classical, realistic still life painting and symmetrical design. He has coined the term “symmetrical realism” to describe this type of work. Most of Swift’s work features circles because he believes the human brain has a deep psychological connection to them. On the Mornington Peninsula of Victoria, Australia, contemporary realist Vicki Sullivan is surrounded by the inspiration of the Southern Ocean on one side and Port Phillip Bay on the other. A life changing experience, she studied art in Italy at the Angel Academy of Art, where she learned the skills the Old Masters employed hundreds of years ago. “It was incredibly fulfilling and absorbing,” says the artist.
