The work of multifaceted artist Delita Martin is currently on view at the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C. Featuring seven monumental works, Delita Martin: Calling Down the Spirits explores themes of interconnections between past and present generations with the objective of creating new iconography for African Americans based on African tradition, personal recollections and physical materials. Martin’s signature creations of large-scale prints—onto which she draws, sews, collages and paints—will be on view through April 19.…

Black Histories, Black Futures marks the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston’s first ever teen-curated exhibition. Last summer, Kenny Harris and his wife, Judy Nimtz, rented a cottage on the Sheep’s Head peninsula in County Cork, Ireland, intent upon painting the landscape. However, Harris discovered the iconic Bantry House just down the road—a 30,000-square-foot manse on 100 acres overlooking Bantry Bay. Harris left a note for the manager of the house to the effect “Hi. I’m a painter. Will you let me come and paint on-site?” Sophie Shelswell White, whose father had inherited the house in 1978, agreed. The family has occupied the house since the 18th century. Often, visiting historic houses on tours, he must rely on hastily shot photos that he uses as references back in the studio. While driving around the Iowa countryside Grant Wood (1891-1942) discovered a classic Gothic Revival farmhouse and began musing about the people who might live there. The painting, American Gothic, 1930, is the result, now an icon of American art. Wood meant it as a positive portrayal of solid American values, but it has become more popular as a satirical look at the same values. Beth Foley has created a series of paintings inspired by American Gothic for the exhibition Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory at Gallery Victor Armendariz in Chicago through February 28. Evan Goldman is a figurative artist based in Bethesda, Maryland. His oil and acrylic paintings range from realism to surrealism and are often narrative. This April, Goldman will have an exhibition of his art at Dacia Gallery in New York City. This exhibit, titled Lost in Dreams, will be the artist’s first solo show in New York. “These paintings show my development over the years,” says Goldman. “As my paintings become more narrative, I want the viewer to see a story behind the painting.” Goldman has a BFA in painting from Maryland Institute College of Art and an MFA in painting from the New York Academy of Art. He also studied under Odd Nerdrum, Robert Liberace and David Gray. Additionally, Goldman participated in the Takt Artist Residency in Berlin, Germany.…

In February 1998, four Florida artists founded the American Impressionist Society with the goal of promoting impressionism through workshops, classes, annual exhibitions and more. As part of that advancement and appreciation, the group has been hosting a national juried exhibition for its members for more than 20 years. The event, which takes place in the fall, is complemented by the recent Small Works Showcase in the spring or summer. Now in its fourth year, this juried exhibition allows members of the organization to present smaller scale works in a national show. Frederick Brosen explains, “A painting is not just a painting but a window into a lifetime of looking, learning, feeling and developing. He began drawing when he was a boy growing up in New York City, even then, fascinated by the architecture of the city and its little pockets of history and intimate neighborhoods. When he was 18, he visited Amsterdam and the Rijksmuseum where he discovered Dutch 17th-century painters. “They invented secular cityscape painting,” he notes. “Their paintings are inclusive and accessible.” Brosen rides his bicycle around early morning New York scouting possible views and “quiet moments” for his watercolor paintings. He does sketches and takes photographs from various angles, then returns to his studio. He begins each work with a graphite drawing over which he layers transparent watercolor.…

Over his nearly eight decades of life, Valencia, Spainborn artist Royo has created a style almost immediately recognizable as Royo.
