The sublime artwork of Andrea Kowch is laced with allegory and symbolism—a filter through which the vast complexities of the human condition are projected back onto the canvas in physical form. Her latest body of work was originally intended as part of a previous solo exhibition but was delayed as a result of the artist’s continuous “quest for complexity and detail,” she says. Across the Open Sky, an upcoming exhibition at RJD Gallery in New York, is an extension of that narrative, a commentary on the many dualities of the natural world: light and dark, stillness and movement, male and female, yin and yang, and the quest for harmony and balance, with wind and the endless sky acting as emblems of spiritual discovery and truth. John Whalley and his wife, Ellen, look forward to summer when flea markets bloom along the byways of Maine. Last year’s “find” was a long, horizontal, late 19th-century photograph of a group of women dressed in white—each had her life and together they had a purpose which to us is now a mystery. The ladies are the backdrop for a painting that will be included in the exhibition John Whalley: “The Hidden Hand” at Vose Galleries in Boston, May 18 through June 29. The title refers to “both the hidden hand behind the making of the painting itself, as well as the hands that made the objects in the paintings and used them, adding the patinas and signs of use embedded on their surfaces,” he explains. Michael Scott has lived on both ends of the Santa Fe Trail, the famous route that carried settlers into the Southwest from the Midwest during the 1800s. “I remember as a kid having this fantasy of the Santa Fe Trail, and now here I’ve lived at the beginning and the end of it,” he says. And beginning June 28, the New Mexico artist will be showing new landscapes that could easily be a travelogue from the trail, and also new ones he’s blazing. His show, Preternatural at EVOKE Contemporary in Santa Fe, New Mexico, will feature 14 new paintings, many of them massive landscapes measuring as tall as 90 inches and as wide as 87 inches. In 2017, American Women Artists launched its 25 in 25 initiative with the goal of hosting 25 museum exhibitions over the course of the next 25 years. On May 24 the organization will open its fourth juried show at Steamboat Art Museum in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. For Z. Z. Wei, art is all about the journey. Chronicled in his book, Light and Shadow: A 20 Year Journey of American Landscape, are 180 paintings from the artist’s two decades of exploring the natural beauty of America’s rural landscapes, as well as essays by our own Santa Fe editor John O’Hern and Rick Spier. But for Wei, where words fail, painting speaks. “I absolutely lack the ability to use words to describe my paintings,” he says. “That’s why I paint. Explaining a painting to someone is difficult. It’s a double-edged sword—it could liberate or limit what viewers can see or feel. I always believe that when I finish a painting, the viewer takes over the life of that painting, and continues the creative process. This makes art powerful.”…

Brooklyn-based painter Derek Buckner has learned how to shimmy into places other artists would balk at, how to explore long-forgotten industrial facilities and how to risk a trespassing ticket to find the perfect vantage point for a new painting. What he comes back to the studio with is the machinery of the past left to rust and rot in the New York sun. It’s not quite postapocalyptic, mostly because there is some method to the madness—tires are in loosely formed piles, property fences are still intact and hints of more ordered life peek through the cracks—but make no mistake, his subjects have seen better days. “It’s not really about whether these places are beautiful or ugly. There seems to be a common thread “ amongst realists—that is, they never think a painting is done,” says artist and gallery owner Robert Lange. This is the thought that led to Robert Lange Studios’ upcoming group show, Perfectionists, which features 20 of the top realist artists working today. For the past 27 years, Oil Painters of America has presented a feast for the eyes with its annual National Juried Exhibition of Traditional Oils by making available new paintings by some of the country’s most talented artists. In 2017, Linden Frederick mounted his solo exhibition Night Stories at Forum Gallery in New York City. The show was a discourse between the paintings and the written word, as some of the country’s best writers were asked to write prose to accompany the 15 nocturnal landscapes. Novelist Ann Patchett, who wrote Bel Canto, was paired with Frederick’s painting Vacant. The painting will now be the centerpiece of a new exhibition at Haynes Galleries in Franklin, Tennessee, along with some of his other nocturnes. Along with Frederick’s paintings, the show will present pieces by some of today’s leading contemporary artists. Julie Bell’s newest paintings take place in an intergalactic realm deep within another universe, where her figures and wild animals float together amid the swirling cosmos of creation. This isn’t Eden, but perfection—in the figure, in the light, in the beasts—permeates through every brushstroke as Bell’s women reign peacefully with their animal counterparts on her ethereal planes. “I truly have this feeling of mankind and nature—humans and nature—we have this connection between us and the animals. Canyon Road In the early 20th century, Canyon Road solidified its status as an art center when Los Cinco Pintores—Will Shuster, Fremont Ellis, Walter Mruk, Jozef Bakos and Willard Nash—made it their home. Living on the Monterey Peninsula in the 1960s, Forrest Moses often visited Point Lobos where the realization came to him that if he looked and he listened, real truths would be expressed. In a monograph of his work he wrote, “You see, I believe being awake—fully awake—is the whole point. Being awake gives one access to the true nature of living and being in the moment, or ‘Being Here Now.’” Being in the present, he is conscious of his presence in nature and its presence in him. His paintings are abstract mark making. His brushstrokes and the marks of his ink-based monotypes recall those of the Japanese sumi-e masters whose aesthetics he admires. A metropolis is often associated with a lively and chaotic atmosphere, but when it is stripped down to its essence the powerful, towering buildings can take on a different perspective. Geoffrey Johnson’s paintings hint at the vibrancy of cities through their inhabitants, but primarily they have a calmness that comes with a focus on the man-made beauty. He further cuts the noise by using a mostly monochromatic color palette that unifies the city rather than highlights its myriad distractions—billboards, cars, flashing lights and more. Much of Johnson’s artwork is derived from his travels, with New York City being one of his most common muses.
