In 1999, the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association held its very first Laguna Beach Plein Air Painting Invitational. This year marks the milestone 20th edition of the event, with 50 artists from around the United States convening at a new venue, the Festival of Arts pavilion, for nine days of festivities, from October 6 to 14. While recent research may eventually prove otherwise, the last wild Barbary lion was killed in 1922 by a French colonial hunter in Morocco. The Barbary lion, however, is the most iconic of all the lion species and once roamed across all of Northern Africa, from Morocco to Egypt. It was the lion who battled at the Coliseum in Rome, the lion housed in the Tower of London, the lion painted by Delacroix, and even today the lion who roars for the Hollywood film studio MGM. Walton Ford has spent the last 18 years of his career researching the Barbary lion. In one of Sarah Lamb’s new works, Crabs, a pair of Dungeness crabs sit on a plate. It’s hard to tell if they are alive, or if this is their post-boil cool-down before dinner. Either way, you can almost taste the ocean. In one of Edward Minoff’s new works, Fossil, a foam-tipped wave crashes in a rolling cascade on a beach. You can almost smell the ocean. Although both artists have painted aspects of the ocean here, their new joint show at Cavalier Galleries in New York City will cover much more as they weave larger themes—including nostalgia, the anatomy of waves and vintage objects—into and out of their work. Over the last year, Kate Zambrano has taken an analytical approach to her artwork, evaluating what exactly she had been creating and what path she wanted to take. What she found was an artistic voice that was free to express and create whatever she wanted rather than remain within the confines of what people wanted to see. More than 8.5 million people live in New York City. That’s more than 27,000 people per square mile. They glide past you on the street, fill buildings that reach into the sky, and zip underneath in packed subway cars. And even with people everywhere, the city offers a sense of privacy, a place where people can get lost in their own thoughts, a feeling of isolation that cuts through the crowds. When artist John Pototschnik paints the American landscape, he finds himself drawn to the rural Midwest and Northern regions of the country. These are places, he says, that exemplify what he finds to be the American way of life. Having grown up in a small town in Kansas, he spent a lot of time in nature and got to know the community. “The things I grew up with and understand, that’s the way America feels to me,” Pototschnik says. “It’s family and neighborhoods, and the work ethic and honesty. One of the highlights of the Boston art world is the Boston International Fine Art Show. Internationally known award-winning artist Evert Ploeg is one of Australia’s most highly regarded portrait artists. A member of the Portrait Society of America for over 15 years, he has also served on the faculty of the annual the Art of the Portrait conferences. In June, he unveiled his painting of University of Melbourne law professor Michael Crommelin. The portrait was commissioned as part of the law school’s 160th anniversary celebration and in recognition of Crommelin’s tenure as the dean. Exploring is in our immigrant blood. Not content to hunker down on the East Coast, early Euro-Americans pushed west on horseback and in wagons. Wagon trains began heading west in 1820 with the opening of the Santa Fe Trail from St. Louis, Missouri. In the 1840s and ’50s, wagon trains reached the West Coast. In 1869 the first transcontinental railroad ran from Omaha, Nebraska, to Sacramento, California. In 1896 Henry Ford made his first experimental automobile and in 1908 introduced the Model T. The first transcontinental airplane flight took place in 1911. The country was open. Santiago Michalek was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Carin Gerard is fascinated by the forms she sees in the natural world. On November 2 Principle Gallery will host the 40th anniversary Marine Art Invitational for the American Society of Marine Artists in one of the great American port cities, Charleston, South Carolina. Fieldwork On September 22, a midcareer retrospective of Tara Donovan’s work opens at MCA Denver. Fieldwork celebrates the artist’s distinct and varied practice, and it will occupy the entire museum. Donovan is known for transformations of neutral or mundane materials like drinking straws, rubber bands and index cards. The exhibition remains on view through January 27, 2019. Town Enclosure A temporary public art sculpture titled Town Enclosure has opened in The Center Park, Jackson, Wyoming. After taking a one-year hiatus in the wake of Hurricane Harvey, Art Market Productions will present its most robust edition of its modern and contemporary Texas Contemporary art fair. In the 1980s, Al and Mary Norton Shands commissioned architect David Morton to design a home for them and their art collection. The sprawling villa sits among the rolling hills of the Kentucky countryside and is called, appropriately, Great Meadows. House and landscape are literally part of the collection. Sol LeWitt and other artists created works to be painted on the walls and ceilings, and Maya Lin created an earthwork that complements the other sculptures dotting the meadows. “I don’t want it to look like a sculpture park,” Al says. “I want each piece to have its own voice.” I found it particularly interesting to see Lin’s Kentucky Line, 2006, slowly softening under vegetation and in the distance Alex Hartley’s contemporary folly, A Gentle Collapsing, 2015. In 2014, Rebecca Newberger Goldstein wrote the book Plato at the Googleplex: Why Philosophy Won’t Go Away. She drops the ancient Greek philosopher into 21st-century America for a book tour. His thoughts are perennially pertinent. In The Power of Myth, Joseph Campbell said, “We need myths that will identify the individual not with his local group but with the planet.” Timelessness and universality are rarely contemplated today. From October 5 to 19, Reinert Fine Art in Charleston, South Carolina, will present the impressionistic landscapes of Jill Basham alongside the highly realistic views of Henry Von Genk III. Andrée Hudson’s paintings use contrasting light and dark colors to invite the viewer to share in the subject’s innocent sensuality. Hudson’s large, dramatic brushstrokes capture the life of her subjects, as though they live and move among us, touching the viewer’s soul with their very being. Known for her depictions of Western scenes involving cowgirls, ranchers, horses, bison, longhorn cattle and other animals, Hudson wishes to be recognized across genres, and has been also exploring other subjects that allow her to delve into the exuberant motion of the figurative life form. The American Impressionist Society was founded in 1998 with a mission to promote the appreciation of impressionism by hosting exhibitions, workshops and educational programs. One of its premier events is the annual National Juried Exhibition, which is now in its 19th year, featuring member work that has been selected specifically to be displayed in the exhibition. This year’s show, held September 27 through October 28, will take place at the Peninsula School of Art’s Guenzel Gallery in Fish Creek, Wisconsin.
