As is tradition, at the 2018 The Art of the Portrait conference, attendees had a chance to view an exhibition of the 24 outstanding paintings, sculptures and drawings selected for the Society’s annual International Portrait Competition. Before the crowds descended upon the show, I had the opportunity to sit in the softly lit room in which they were beautifully displayed and contemplate the diverse scope of this year’s works. Thankfully, decisions about which pieces get hung where and why are left to more artistic minds than mine, but the result is a veritable feast for the eyes. And for a short time, these artworks—each unique and varied in design—share the same space, forever connecting these artists and their stories. Lucian Freud wrote, “I am only interested in painting the actual person, in doing a painting of them, not in using them to some ulterior end of art.” Some artists insist that they not know the sitter. Others paint family members and themselves. Some comment that a portrait is more a likeness of the artist than the sitter. The best portraits, regardless of motivation are, as Freud suggests, “the actual person.” Suzanne Scherer and Pavel Ouporov have done drawings and paintings of their son, Nicolas, since he was an infant—subtle silverpoint drawings and egg tempera works of great complexity. The rocky shores of Maine have attracted American art lovers for centuries, with many famed artists spending time in the region. Frederic Edwin Church, Thomas Cole, Winslow Homer and Marsden Hartley all painted the harbors, shorelines and mountains of the state, and today, Maine is home to countless museums, galleries and artists that continue to turn to the landscape for inspiration, seasonally and year-round. 8/3-8/19 Santa Fe, NM In the 1960s, Frank Stella remarked, “One could stand in front of any abstract expressionist work for a long time, and walk back and forth, and inspect the depths of the pigment and the inflection and all the painterly brushwork for hours.” Stella shunned the painterly approach in his own mechanical and precise paintings at that time, but it is interesting to see that even he appreciated the expression of the materials and the gestures of the abstract artist. Through 8/17 Pasadena, CA A new exhibition now open at American Legacy Fine Arts in Pasadena, California, presents new paintings by Los Angeles artist Adrian Gottlieb, whose works—many titled after important figures in Greek mythology—give silent and contemplative spaces to female figures whose calm expressions and humble demeanors evoke a peaceful serenity. “The new work borrows some psychological themes, sometimes from classic stories. Janet Grissom’s journey with art began around the kitchen table when, at the age of 4, her and her mother would draw pictures about living on the farm. As she traveled through life her interest in art progressively grew. She loved art history and learning new art techniques, and this came in handy as her need for art skills increased. Constantly she was asked to use her art abilities in school, the universities and as she taught in public schools. Now she is using her time and energy to focus on her personal expressions. Through 8/11 Los Angeles, CA After the death of a close friend over a decade ago, Paul Pitsker began thinking about how delicate life is. Attracted to fragile and strange subject matter, he began painting what look on the surface to be traditional still lifes, but incorporated narrative elements and dark humor, playing on themes of impending disaster. These works are now on view at George Billis Gallery in Los Angeles. In Never Was a small plastic figure of a man stands under flowers. “He’s got a very assertive, masculine posture, but he’s undermined by the pink of the flowers,” Pitsker explains. 8/25 Newport, RI Newport, Rhode Island, has had a long maritime history. During the Civil War, it was host to the campus of the U.S. Naval Academy, and today the New York Yacht Club maintains “Harbor Court” in the town. Artist Peter Arguimbau embraces that history. His Mariner Gallery, at the heart of historic Newport, makes its home in a pre-Revolutionary War building that was once a ship’s chandlery, and which he and his son restored with boats in mind. “We built a frigate in the basement,” he explains. “Beams are holding up the ceiling, and the whole bottom is curved like the hull of a ship. His techniques and traditions have been inspired by the Old Dutch Masters, while the compositions are meticulously crafted. Many times his titles reflect the objects in the scenes, with the items being ones that he’s borrowed from friends or has found in antique shops. Royston also does commission work in a variety of subjects, allowing his skills to move beyond still lifes.
