Presidential Portraits The official portraits of former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama were revealed at the National Portrait Gallery in February. The president was painted by Kehinde Wiley, and depicts him sitting in a chair in front of an intense pattern of green foliage. The first lady was painted by Baltimore-based artist Amy Sherald. The Wild West The Addison Gallery of American Art strings together various artworks that display the nation’s view on firearms throughout history. Artists including Civil War-era Timothy H. O’Sullivan and the more modern perspectives of Andy Warhol and Carroll Dunham explore how the gun made an impact on America’s story. The show runs through July 31. For many artists, they can identify a time or name a person that changed the direction of their life. For Mario Robinson it was his high school art teacher. Taking note of his giftedness, she encouraged him to view his art in a serious light. After speaking with his mother about Robinson attending an art college, she helped him assemble a collection of his work and attend Portfolio Day at Pratt Institute. Robinson says, “Visiting the campus forged my aspirations, as it exposed me to serious draftsman and expanded my world view.” Graduating with his BFA from Pratt Institute, Robinson has been drawing and painting almost every day since. The Bo Bartlett Center at Columbus State University, in Georgia, opened in January to rousing success. The center, designed by famed Seattle architect Tom Kundig, contains 18,400 square feet of exhibition space and a learning center dedicated to American realism. “I am honored to have played any part in this incredible institution. It has been a labor of love for many people over the past 15-plus years. The university, collectors, donors, local and national benefactors have all come together to make this possible,” says Bo Bartlett, who is Distinguished Visiting Professor of Art at the school. “I am grateful and humbled by the turnout and the support.
