Thomas Rowlandson (1756-1827) was a British artist and satirist who turned his eye toward the political, social and sexual foibles of his time. His robust erotic engravings are full of life. In the 1960s, Andy Warhol (1928-1987) turned his camera toward the Empire State Building and filmed dispassionately for 8 hours and 5 minutes. Flesh is a day in the life of a hustler played by Joe Dallesandro who spends much of the time nude— shocking in 1969. In Rowlandson and Warhol we witness the lives of others—intimate, raunchy and sometimes boring. Both enjoyed the shock value. Both were removed from whatever intimacy they showed in their work. After a trip to Japan in the early 1900s, brothers William S. and John T. Spaulding began to assemble a collection of Japanese prints. In 1921 they donated over 6,000 prints to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. The museum notes, “In order to preserve the delicate colors of the woodblock prints, which fade rapidly when exposed to light, they specified that the prints must never be exhibited in the galleries.” The MFA has digitized the collection so they can now be seen in all their subtle detail. Among the prints is Twilight Snow at Mount Hira (Hira Bosetsu), from the series Eight Views of Ômi (Ômi Hakkei), by Utagawa Hiroshige II (Shigenobu) (1826- 1869). Recently, when interviewing Alexandra Tyng for this article, she said to me, “I enjoy the challenges of being an artist.” Her comment was not meant in a negative connotation, but rather in the context of the artistic journey. As a child, Tying’s favorite pastime was drawing. She would fill books and paper with drawings. Sometimes her father would draw with her, and her favorite subjects were people and houses—both inside and outside—often in combination. Most of the good realistic art she saw was illustration and color plates in art books. By the time Tyng was in high school, she was a regular visitor to the American wing in the Philadelphia Museum of Art. When asked what she wanted to be when she grew up, Tyng always answered, “an artist,” thinking…

In 2010, Andrew W.K. was invited to host Revolver magazine’s annual Golden Gods Awards. Revolver marketed the heavy metal awards show with a commissioned painting done in the style of many 1980s fantasy paintings—think “sword and sorcery” imagery with mythological monsters, semi-naked heroines and lots of glistening muscles. W.K. was immediately drawn to the work and reached out to two of the posters’ artists, married artists Julie Bell and Boris Vallejo. When Richard Demato’s RJD Gallery in Sag Harbor, New York, burned to the ground in December 2016 I thought of the great paintings I had just written about for the February 2017 issue of this magazine. One of them was Margaret Bowland’s The Small Dancer. Dana Reis had fallen in love with the painting but it was gone before she was able to consider buying it for her collection. Instead, she commissioned Bowland to paint another portrait of the same model in the same chair but this time in a horizontal format “with the sense of the one that burned.” Small Dancer now has pride of place in the gallery surrounding the main staircase in her Sagaponack, New York, home. Giovanni Antonio Canal, better known as Canaletto, accompanied his father to Rome in 1719-1720 to help him paint the scenery for the performances of two operas by Alessandro Scarlatti. He soon turned to topographical paintings, especially of Venice, the images that often come to mind when we think of “cityscapes.” In 1746 he moved to London where he painted for 10 years. London: Seen Through an Arch of Westminster Bridge, 1746-47, is an unusual view of the city from beneath the first Westminster Bridge, then under construction. Christopher Wren’s St. Paul’s Cathedral, which had been consecrated not quite 50 years before, is on the right and the steeples of other Wren churches pop up along the skyline. Working in a realistic style, artist Mark Hobson finds inspiration in the varying habitats of the natural world— from deserts to rainforests to high alpine to underwater and even weathered buildings and boats. “Living on the rugged outer coast of Vancouver Island—though my work is strongly influenced by the drama of the North Pacific and the moody rainsoaked forests and inlets that surround my studio—the ultimate goal is to try to portray the feeling of a particular place rather than copy the landscape precisely,” says Hobson. Still lifes, cityscapes and landscapes will be featured in the upcoming exhibition Traditional Impressions at The Legacy Gallery in Scottsdale, Arizona. The show, which features paintings by Rett Ashby, Tibor Nagy and Laura Robb, highlights an array of techniques in each of the subject matters. On view from February 15 to 25, with a reception on opening night from 7 to 9 p.m., each artist will present at least eight new works. Ashby, who paints landscapes, typically with farmhouses, will present the work Sparkling Panes, which shows the main house set to the right of a horizontal canvas with the lush vegetation spread out in front of it. In 1928 Henry Beston wrote The Outermost House, a classic in environmental literature and a book that almost singlehandedly led to the development of the Cape Cod National Seashore. Rachel Carson said the work was the only book that ever influenced her writing. Beston based the book on his time in a 20-by-16-foot house situated delicately on the dunes of Eastham in Cape Cod. Equestrian Portrait Philbrook Museum of Art has recently acquired a never-before-seen work by Kehinde Wiley. The large-scale Equestrian Portrait of King Philip IV was begun in the midst of Wiley’s A New Republic retrospective, and is the first work by Wiley to be acquired by an Oklahoma museum. The painting hangs in the Italian Room of the Philbrook’s historic Villa. Dark Matter Dark Matter: Paintings by Kenneth Nicholson will be exhibited at the Westmoreland Museum of American Art in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, in the Robertshaw Gallery through February 4. Nicholson’s narratives depict melodrama and disrupt the traditional interplay between figure and background, releasing the character’s inner drama into negative space. Beginning January 27, Sirona Fine Art in Hallandale Beach, Florida, will present the works of Cuban oil painter Yunior Hurtado. Lauded for the nuances of physical emotion in his works, as well as his tactful capturing of youth culture and sentiment, Hurtado is very much an artist of the people. Hurtado began his artistic studies at the Vocational School of Arts in Cuba, and concluded his educational career in 1999 at the Professional Academy of Fine Arts. In the following years, the artist has focused on developing his work, participating in events inside and outside his country with more than 20 solo and group exhibitions. Amusement parks, skylines and interiors all reflect different aspects of the city in works by Francis Livingston, Joseph Lorusso and Brad Aldridge, on view at Bonner David Galleries’ Within the City show. Livingston has a tradition of painting boardwalk pieces, like his Boardwalk Dawn, which will appear in the show. “When I started out with the boardwalk pieces, I would go out to places like Coney Island and paint what I saw, but what I really liked about it was the nostalgic side of it,” he explains. What resulted was a piece with combined views. A roller coaster from one boardwalk juxtaposed behind a Ferris wheel from another, giving the feel of a boardwalk from an older time. “They are very much creations of my imaginations.” Having been a landscape…

According to artist Morgan Samuel Price, “Light can be inspirational and ensures genuine intrigue for me. Capturing the light as it lies across the observed space suggests all kinds of possibilities to me. Investigating, experimenting [and] stretching the possibilities creates my excitement.” The latter statement, she adds, closely explains what happens when she sees even the simplest of subjects. These subjects may not align with her interests, but an interesting juxtaposition of shapes can capture her attention. “Beautiful inspires me, funny situations, rhythmical movement, rough and jagged, confusion to be organized inspires me,” Price explains, and further notes, “Nature has a calming effect on most and I am no exception.
