Our collectors met in college and after 25 years in Greenwich, Connecticut, moved to Boston’s Back Bay a year and a half ago. Celia Thaxter’s father was a lighthouse keeper on White Island in the Isles of Shoals, a group of islands that straddle the border of New Hampshire and Maine. He built a resort hotel on nearby Hog Island, which he renamed Appledore, and Thaxter built a vibrant seaside garden on the island’s rugged terrain. She was also a poet and writer. The hotel attracted the artistic luminaries of the time: Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote about her in his American Notebooks and Childe Hassam’s impressionist paintings of her garden were used to illustrate her book An Island Garden. Hassam experimented with light, color and atmosphere during the 20 summers he spent on Appledore, producing nearly 10 percent of his life’s work there. The definition of Carl Jung’s concept of synchronicity can be boiled down to “meaningful coincidences.” Painter Linden Frederick was born in Amsterdam, New York, a few miles from Gloversville, where his grandmother grew up. Writer Richard Russo grew up in Gloversville. Both artists migrated to Maine and joined the ranks of the great interpreters of the state’s unique light and its even more unique people. His years of practicing painting techniques have allowed him to render wildlife in the same realistic style that is often used in still lifes. “My first training was still life—nearly 12 years of private lessons,” says Jesic. “The color and vibrancy of the Australian birds attracted my attention, and I developed my wildlife paintings to as high degree of detail as I would for still life.” Using traditional technical components of art has always been important to Jesic, and his previous career as a biomedical service engineer installing and repairing quality control equipment used in the paint industry only enhanced that aspect of his art.
