Alongside the EOS R6 Mark III, Canon has introduced a new large-aperture standard prime lens. The RF 45mm F1.2 STM stands out for both its unexpectedly portable dimensions and its remarkably low price. At just £479.99, it’s by far the cheapest f/1.2 autofocus full-frame lens on the market. Size-wise, the lens measures 78mm in diameter and 75mm in length, while weighing just 346g. It accepts 67mm filters and can focus as close as 45cm. Unlike some of the firm’s cheaper lenses, there’s a click-stopped control dial in front of the manual focus ring. Optically, the lens employs a relatively simple 9-element, 7-group design that includes a single aspherical element. It’s been half a decade since Canon released its last ever DSLR – the Canon EOS 850D. I was an early adopter of the original EOS R – Canon’s first foray into full-frame mirrorless cameras which was at the time much needed and well overdue, to compete with Sony who pioneered the move to full-frame mirrorless with its A7 in 2013. Nikon also took until 2018 to release its full-frame mirrorless camera, the Z7, though Canon users like myself had to hold on a further two weeks to see the full-frame EOS R. Round eight Movement This is a round where you might want to set yourself the challenge of capturing a fast-moving subject in a fraction of a second, or at the other end of the spectrum, choose a shutter speed of several seconds in order to reflect the movement of clouds or water, or even a person or animal. For the former, anticipation and preparation are crucial, so take time to work out where your subject is likely to appear and which direction it will take. For the latter, think about how to still give your image a focal point when shooting with a long exposure, and how to create separation between the elements of your composition. ANDROID smartphone maker Oppo has announced a new flagship phone, the Find X9 Pro, alongside the Find X9. The Pro model has some interesting features, including a 200MP f/2.1 telephoto camera, 50MP f/1.5 main camera and 50MP f/3 ultrawide. There’s also a new Hasselblad Hi-Res mode, which enables you to capture 200MP still images, a more powerful battery and an optional Hasselblad teleconverter, which gives a focal length of 230mm. At the heart of a camera’s automatic exposure system lie three basic procedures. First came shutter priority, in which the photographer chose a shutter speed and the camera automatically set the correct aperture. Then came the more popular aperture priority, allowing the photographer to select an aperture, leaving it to the camera to set the correct shutter speed. Finally, both shutter speeds and apertures were chosen automatically and set with a program mode. All of which took off big time when battery-driven electronics hit cameras in the 1970s. What you might not know is that automatic exposure modes like these go back much further, to the days when meters were activated by selenium cells that didn’t need batteries to operate, and when automation relied on mechanical levers, rotating cogs, expanding…

LETTER OF THE WEEK GAS attack Does anyone else have the same problem as me? In the ‘old’ days, I had one camera and one, or on occasion two, lenses. When I went out to take photos, I grabbed my camera (no bag in those days) and took my photos. With one lens, I just worked harder and made whatever camera I had work for me. With my new first-world problems, I have five cameras I regularly use, with many lenses, and innumerable bags. And when I go out these days, I can never decide which body to take, which lens(es) or which bag to carry, or whether I need a flash, or spare memory card etc. It’s a (very small) nightmare. Clothing has become a disposable aspect of life. Factories churn out cheap outfits to follow fleeting trends, only to be discarded next season. In contrast, traditional garments carry stories, are highly valued and even passed down to the next generation. Historically, people owned a few clothes and only invested in one high-quality outfit for important occasions. To see someone wear them today is to be reminded of generations that came before and the traditions that bound communities together. So when I came across this image by Zsófia Mohos of a sokác lady from Vojvodina, it felt like a rare treat from Instagram’s fickle algorithm. Heritage Mohos is a Hungarian documentary photographer.
