LONDON-based photographer Capri McPherson-Noel has been named winner of the second LCE Photographer of the Year competition with this evocative image, entitled ‘Sunkissed Boy’. Capri receives £3,000 in London Camera Exchange vouchers for her win. Somehow, no matter how hard you try, the tripod’s legs get in the way, and it’s tricky to get the height or angle you need, even if you’re using a tripod with a central column that can be set horizontally. LETTER OF THE WEEK Know the drill In response to Gordon Degg’s letter ‘Driller is killer’ in the 4 March issue. Gordon drilled a 0.02in hole in his camera’s body cap, but really, a much smaller pinhole around 0.2mm is what is needed. The pinhole needs to be perfectly round and made in very thin material. So it would be better to drill a 6mm hole in the cap, then stick an aluminum foil disc behind the hole and then make a tiny hole in the foil with the extreme tip of a pin. Or better still, buy a ready- made laser-cut pinhole. The back of the disc needs to be matt black or partly covered in black felt to avoid reflections. An indoor shot that I took was taken…

Leica is one of those names for which the overused term ‘iconic’ would not be out of place. Developed by Oscar Barnack, these small 35mm cameras changed the face of photography in the 20th century. Their small size and ability to take 36 exposures before reloading meant that photographers could take more photos with less fuss than was possible with earlier generations of cameras. As a result photojournalism, particularly war photography, was revolutionised. The street photography genre was largely born of these discreet cameras, with Henri Cartier-Bresson, HCB to aficionados, being one of the best-known practitioners.
