Technique SONY’S MIRRORLESS MILESTONES On 16 October 2013, Sony announced the world’s first full-frame mirrorless cameras, the Alpha A7 and Alpha A7R. This put in place a chain of events that led to the demise of the DSLR and established Sony’s position as a serious camera maker. So, what were the A7 and A7R, how did we get to them, why did they matter, and what have they led to? Mirrorless cameras weren’t suddenly invented in 2013. They’d been around for a while, but principally as smaller-format, lower-cost enthusiast cameras. We offer support to all new members to suit their abilities, from beginners to more-experienced photographers. We have kept our fees low to help make it affordable and value for money. For example, telephoto lenses let you zoom in on distant subjects, while macro lenses enable close-ups of small objects. It’s always a huge treat to take a look at the winning and highly commended images from Wildlife Photographer of the Year, and 2023’s selection is no different. Over the years, there’s been a noticeable shift away from what you might call ‘classic’ wildlife photography, towards more artistic representations of certain subjects, as well as journalistic approaches to important topics. More than 100 extraordinary photographs are being displayed at the exhibition in London which runs at the Natural History Museum until 30 June 2024. LENS TEST Testbench With a five-year head start over its rivals in building up its full-frame mirrorless system, Sony is now replacing its older lenses with updated versions. Following hot on the heels of the FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM II and FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II, the Sony FE 16-35mm F2.8 GM II completes the firm’s second-generation trinity of pro-spec zooms. Compared to its 2017 predecessor, the new lens promises improved optics and superior operability in a smaller, lighter package. SIGMA has unveiled the world’s smallest and lightest f/2.8 ultra-wide zoom for APS-C mirrorless cameras, in the shape of the Sigma 10-18mm F2.8 DC DN | Contemporary. With a focal-length range equivalent to 15-27mm in full-frame terms, it should be ideal for landscapes, architecture, travel, and interiors, as well as for content creators and vloggers. At 62mm in length, 72.2mm in diameter, and just 260g, the lens is indeed strikingly compact. Sigma explains that this is down to the ‘use of an aspherical lens with large eccentricity and refractive index’ within the 13-element, 10-group optical formula. This works in combination with 3 more aspherical elements, plus 3 FLD and 1 SLD glass element, with the aim of giving high-resolution images. Broadly, though not exclusively, Paxette I models were fixed-lens 35mm cameras with extinction meters in what looked like their second rangefinder windows; Paxette II cameras had interchangeable lenses; Super Paxettes added coupled rangefinders.
