One of the main differences between the way amateurs and professionals think is that most amateurs generally only focus on the single image – getting ‘the shot’ – whereas pros tend to think about bodies of work. This means that when asked to submit a set of images for, say, a competition, many amateurs don’t know where to start – as we are reminded every year with our portfolio-based Maestro contest. It’s great to bag a competition-winning image, but even better to build a body of work that tells a story or could form the basis of a coherent book or exhibition. NIKON has announced the return of its YouTube series, ‘Nikon Sessions’, following the success of its first season. The series – hosted by Ricci Chera, training specialist at Nikon School – includes discussions between top Nikon photographers, creators, ambassadors, educators and staff. MARTIN Reed, the founder of the analogue photographic materials supplier, Silverprint, has died aged 69 after a short illness. Martin graduated in Photographic Science in 1975 and founded Silverprint in 1984, after cutting his teeth at Haringey Photographic and Goldfinger in London. Martin soon earned a reputation as a customer-focused and highly knowledgeable supplier, and set up the Printer of the Year competition with Ilford. He also wrote several books on film photography, including Spirits of Salts and Silver Gelatin, as well as contributing to magazines. ‘Anything Silverprint sold, Martin had tried and tested, and would give personal recommendations and hints on usage,’ said AP friend and colleague Geoff Howard. ‘He was one of the kindest and most generous of people and was treasured by his friends.’…

Simply put, a photography portfolio is a curated set of photographs. It can be presented for exhibition, submitted to competitions, help build business or be just a personal selection of the best images you have made. It is likely you will build multiple portfolios in your photographic career. Regardless of the type of portfolio you are creating, the one thing that all portfolios require is some editing. Understanding how to not only create, but select and edit, could make the difference in being shortlisted or winning in a competition, or to landing a professional commission. Photo Critique I have been fortunate enough to know David Hurn for a number of years due to overlapping projects, the shared acquaintances of documentary photography and the close proximity of our domestic lives in the South Welsh valleys. I have always been drawn to his photographs and have included them in a number of group shows and love most of what he does. I do, however, have a particular fondness of those from his native Wales.
