SERIF has released a new version of its creative software suite, comprising Affinity Photo, Affinity Designer and Affinity Publisher. With Affinity Photo 2.1, you can now choose both WebP and JPEG XL as export file types from the batch export dialog box. Crop tool functionality has also been improved. And in the iPad version when browsing your photos, either to open or place an image, apps now use the inbuilt iPadOS Photos app rather than Serif’s bespoke browser as before. Photo Critique Most of us learn at some disappointing stage that a picture’s appeal is not directly proportional to the difficulty of taking it. Many’s the time have I expended blood, sweat and tears over the creation of a masterpiece in which no one else is particularly interested. When Fujifilm released its latest Instax model, the Fujifilm Instax Mini 12, I was curious to see how it had upgraded the camera, especially as the Mini 12 only has two modes compared to the Mini 8’s five modes. The latest model boasts automatic exposure and flash control, and a handy selfie mirror. The Fujifilm Instax Mini 12 is smaller and lighter than the Instax Mini 8, something that I did not notice until I put it into a camera bag I bought for the Mini 8, and it looked like me in ill-fitting jeans.…

CANON has revealed its most affordable RF-mount camera to date, with the new EOS R100 designed to be an easy-to-use family camera. Key features include a 24MP APS-C sensor that offers ISO 100-12,800, expandable to ISO 25,600. The camera can shoot at 3.5 frames per second with continuous AF, or 6.5fps with focus fixed. There’s face and eye detection but no subject-detection AF. For video, 4K recording is available at 25fps, but with a 1.55x crop and contrast-detect AF only. Full HD recording is available at up to 120fps, using the full width of the sensor. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are built in for smartphone connectivity. Design-wise, the EOS R100 is essentially a simplified version of the recent EOS R50. It uses the same 2.36m-dot, 0.59x viewfinder, but makes do with…

GOOGLE has warned that it could delete any Google Photos accounts that have not been used, or signed into, for at least two years. The firm cited security concerns on a recent blog. ‘Forgotten or unattended accounts often rely on old or re-used passwords that may have been compromised, haven’t had two-factor authentication set up, and receive fewer security checks by the user.’ The earliest any action will be taken is this December, but it’s worth checking Google Photos collections set up with old Google accounts. ADOBE is integrating Firefly, its AI model for generating image and text effects, into the latest beta version of Photoshop. A new tool called Generative Fill enables users to select from a choice of AI-generated images and other elements to add to an existing picture. The AI edits are applied non-destructively via layers and Generative Fill also enables you to change the aspect ratio of an image. ‘Firefly is designed to generate images that are safe for commercial use and is trained on Adobe Stock’s hundreds of millions of professional-grade, licensed, high-resolution images, helping ensure Firefly won’t generate content based on other people’s or brands’ intellectual property (IP),’ said Adobe.
