OPENING in 1977 by a collective, the small but very well-known Side photography gallery in Newcastle has closed its doors for the last time amid cost pressures and cuts to funding.
It has featured work by a veritable who’s who in documentary photography including Tish Murtha, Chris Killip, Diane Arbus, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Weegee, Robert Doisneau, Mik Critchlow, and more recently Jim Mortram, Tessa Bunney and Ivor Prickett.
Last year, the gallery was unsuccessful in securing another four years of funding from the Arts Council, and with the rising cost of electricity, Sunday 9 April was its final day of display.
A crowd-funder has been set up in the hope of resurrecting the gallery in 2024. Visit crowdfunder.co.uk/p/saveside…
