Having been co-founded by Henri-Cartier Bresson, the Magnum Photos agency has had street photography running through its veins since its inception in 1947. Through its journalistic documentary bias, it continues to this day to work on the principles of telling stories about people and places all over the world. The agency has well over 100 members and could have asked any number of them to put together a street photography course, but it’s brought together some of its biggest guns for this online, on-demand offering. When it comes to photographing the streets, there are certain criteria your lens needs to meet. Generally, you will be reacting to what is happening in front of your eyes, while trying to remain as unobtrusive as possible. Ideally the smaller and lighter the lens the better, but you also want the autofocus to be fast, accurate and quiet. Many street photographers tend to favour working with small cameras and compact prime lenses. You could use a zoom, of course, but they’re generally larger, heavier, and less discreet, meaning you’re much more likely to draw attention to yourself while out shooting. I’ve known Nils Jorgensen and his work for over 20 years, and he has always been an enormous source of inspiration to me as a street photographer. Nils is one of those rare photographers who doesn’t have to try hard, he just has to be himself and the pictures come. The original Sony A7 was unveiled alongside the A7R in October 2013, and at £1,549 (body only) was the most affordable full-frame camera at the time. DSLR Lenses Interchangeable lenses come in a huge array of types for shooting different kinds of subjects IN GENERAL, the easiest way to expand the kinds of pictures you can take is by buying different types of lenses. For example, telephoto lenses let you zoom in on distant subjects, while macro lenses enable close-ups of small objects. Large-aperture lenses allow you to isolate subjects against blurred backgrounds, or shoot in low light without having to raise the ISO too high. Meanwhile, all-in-one superzooms cover a wide range of subjects, but usually with rather lower optical quality. LETTER OF THE WEEK Didn’t snooze, didn’t lose For a long time I believed my favourite lens focal length was 50mm. Later I made another revealing discovery. When using a 35-70mm zoom lens it transpired that almost all my photographs were being made at the 70mm end, and even then I was wanting more telephoto capability. Then I had a stroke of luck sometime in 2016. Rising early, I was surfing eBay around 5.30am when I came across an auction for a professional Tamron AF 70-210mm f/2.8 lens. NIGHT AND THE CITY You get a sense of the power that Liam Wong’s pictures possess when you realise his new book, After Dark, was backed by a crowdfunding campaign that reached over five times its initial £40,000 target. But don’t worry, while video editing may seem a little scary, a lot of the theory is similar to programs you probably already use such as Photoshop and Lightroom. A mixture of timeline Layers and sliders to correct the colour and exposure elements of your footage will make you feel instantly at home.
