AH, THE ‘Overseas Holiday Number’. Remember those carefree days when people used to travel abroad? This week’s issue advised readers where to go to get the best travel photos in 1964, as well as practical details such as flight costs. Over a dozen nations were featured, including the USA, India, Egypt, Lebanon and various European countries. Some of the illustrations, if taken now, might be considered cliches but this was a more innocent era before mass tourism. Back then travel was still very expensive – a return flight to Canada cost from £179 (£3,780 in today’s money), Jamaica cost £247 (£5,250) and flights to Japan started at £459 (£9,670).
