First Raid of the Blitz by Keystone

On the left is the Tower of London, and on the right is Tower Bridge. The Blitz (the German word for lightning that was coined by the British press) saw London bombed by the Luftwaffe for 56 out of the 57 nights following 7 September. Other cities including Liverpool, Cardiff, Plymouth, Swansea, Southampton, Belfast, Glasgow, Birmingham, Manchester, Sheffield and Coventry were also targeted. More than 40,000 civilians are thought to have died as a result of Luftwaffe bombing.
