ADOBE has released several updates across a number of its Creative Cloud apps for photography, video, illustration and drawing. The rather bare-bones (but free) Photoshop for iPad now gets curves adjustment tools to make it easier to tweak colours and tones in your images without having to go back to the desktop version; you can add and drag control points on a combined RGB curve or the individual channels, or make a curve manually. Apple Pencil pressure sensitivity can also be adjusted so you don't have to press down quite so hard to get thicker brushes, etc. If you also shoot and edit video, there is now support for ProRes RAW footage in Premiere Pro and After Effects as well as Adobe's CinemaDNG format. THE ZV-1 is an interesting little video camera, with some clever new features that appear well targeted to its intended audience. However, it's not really supposed to be for stills, as Sony would have you buy an RX100 instead. But if there's one feature that might tempt serious photographers, it's the rare delight of getting a fully articulated screen on a pocket camera, which I've really enjoyed using. Stay-at-home photography I thought you might like to hear what our small village camera club has been doing to improve our photography skills during the coronavirus crisis. We have been setting ourselves a new photo challenge each week without wandering beyond the confines of the garden wall! Subjects have included board games, food and drink, clocks, flowers, insects and self-portraits among many others. The images are shared within the group using social media and are open to critique! Recent events have triggered our survival instincts, encouraging us to focus on basics such as obtaining food, seeking shelter, and protecting our finances and health. But while we have been concentrating on our primitive needs, nature has been enjoying a break from human interference. Staying indoors indefinitely is not the solution to climate change. A lack of tourism can have a negative impact on the planet – many national parks and reserves use eco tourism to fund vital conservation efforts, for example. What’s more, when we become less globally mobile there is a human cost in the form of job losses and lack of diversity. AP's Back In The Day feature from April 1983 (18 April issue) mentioned the Cibachrome prints from slides process. Those of us who used it or processed our own film can only shudder in hindsight at the toxic rubbish that went down our drains. The Cibachrome chemistry was, as you pointed out, highly noxious and sulphurous. The process also involved a ‘neutralising' powder, although how much, if any, of those vile chemicals were actually neutralised is anyone's guess. I also processed hundreds of black & white films at my kitchen sink with not a thought of the environment. What is RISO printing? RISO printing produces unique results using a stencil process and ink drums that screen prints an image onto the paper. It's a really involved process from start to finish that requires you to make creative decisions, from the colour of the inks to the choice of paper. With a restricted colour range, including fluorescent pink and metallic gold, prints can use between one and five ink colours overlaid to create interesting and unique results. Keep vampires at bay When you leave a plug in a socket, even if it's not switched on, it draws electricity. This is known as vampire (or standby) power. Unplug battery chargers, lights etc when not in use. Share the burden Ask yourself if your journey is really necessary. If it is, consider using public transport or sharing a lift.
