AS A YOUNG man, Ken Grant worked as a labourer in the dockland district of Birkenhead on the River Mersey. The period stayed with him, and it was only a matter of time before he would return as a photographer to document it in order to unite the past and the present.
These photographs, taken between 1989 and 1997, focus on the river's hinterland, cinder paths, dockland and the expansive landfill that occupies Bidston Moss. Grant's images show us the symbiosis between the locals and the location. Children play. Adults scavenge.
