Canon has announced a new entry-level SLR, the EOS 250D. The camera is a successor to the well-received EOS 200D, and is based around a 24.1-million-pixel APS-C sensor and Canon's latest DIGIC 8 image processor, which adds 4K video recording at up to 25 frames per second, 4K time-lapse and stills grabbing. With a price point of around £500, the new camera should appeal to vloggers as well as to fledgling photography enthusiasts. The DIGIC 8 processor also supports a range of improvements in Live View autofocus, along with Eye AF, an Auto Lighting Optimizer, a Digital Lens Optimizer and Highlight Tone Priority. EXHIBITION Don McCullin Tate Britain, Millbank, London, SW1P 4RG There's still time left to see the extraordinary Don McCullin retrospective at Tate Britain. Encompassing many rooms and several hundred images (all printed by Don himself), this large-scale exhibition is not only a back catalogue of Don's work, but indeed a look back at some of the defining moments of the 20th century. Visiting the exhibition can hardly be described as enjoyable. Instead, you might be haunted, emotional, provoked or all of the above. It's solidly built, heavy as cameras of that era usually were, with a focal plane shutter speeded 1-1/1,000sec and a 50mm f/1.9 standard lens. There's no meter or rangefinder, but it's still perfectly serviceable for today's film user. For the collector, however, there's more to the Reflexa than meets the eye. This unique, monochrome photograph of the iconic Selfridges Building in Birmingham was uploaded to our Twitter page using the hashtag #appicoftheweek. It was taken by photographer Tim Scott. He tells us, ‘I've seen many images of this building and I really wanted to capture an image that was a little bit different from the norm. ‘So I decided to get up close to it and used my 16-55mm zoom lens as wide as it would go. The light was changing constantly because it was bright but with fast-moving clouds, so timing was an important aspect in getting the final shot.'…

The Panasonic Lumix S1R, with its 47.3MP full-frame sensor, has been a hot topic of conversation among photographers of late. With a large, brawny body it takes a different approach from what we've seen from Canon, Nikon and Sony who've all taken the route of trying to make their mirrorless cameras smaller and lighter than DSLRs. What's also interesting is the S1R's high-resolution mode that stitches image information recorded in eight exposures to create a massive 187MP image bursting with detail. Wildlife photography has changed dramatically in the past two decades, with the main drivers being the advent of digital and social media. This new approach to wildlife photography means we not only need to look at established ethics (our sense of what is right and wrong), but we also need to consider them in light of these changes. Our established wildlife photography ethics are set via the Royal Photographic Society’s The Nature Photographers’ Code of Practice and two main laws, The Wildlife and Countryside Act and The Animal Welfare Act. Ethical questions within wildlife photography are not just restricted to the animal kingdom. There is a similar issue that affects plant photographers too, and that is gardening to tidy up a scene. In a way it goes to the heart of wildlife photography. Do you always photograph exactly what is there without any interference or do you ‘doctor' a situation? Intruding, white grass stems running across a gorgeous early purple orchid are unsightly, so do you remove them? This is what plant photographers call gardening. ‘Crying Girl on the Border', a heartrending picture of a Honduran toddler with her mother being taken into custody by border officials in Texas, has been selected as the Photo of the Year in the prestigious 2019 World Press Photo Contest. The image was taken by Getty Images staff photographer John Moore last June, and the resultant public outcry put pressure on President Trump to reverse some of his punitive border policies. ‘I think this image touched many people's hearts, as it did mine, because it humanises a larger story,' said Moore. ‘When you see Yanela's face you really see the humanity and the fear of making such a long journey and crossing a border in the dead of night.' Last week, we reviewed the Diane Arbus exhibition currently running at the Hayward Gallery in London and saw the benefits of looking back at a photographer's earlier work. The biggest surprise of that exhibition was the way in which it showed that the seeds of Arbus's later career were established from very early on. Interesting, then, that this book detailing the fledgling years of photography superstar Annie Leibovitz does much the same. Leibovitz spent much of her childhood on army bases. Both she and her mother would be shipped from place to place following Annie's father, a lieutenant colonel in the US Air Force. During the Vietnam War, the Leibovitz family found themselves stationed in the Philippines and it was here that the young Annie first picked up a camera.…

Andrew Davison, County Durham Andrew recently turned to photography as a hobby after his parents sadly passed away a few years ago and left him some money. He bought a Canon EOS 70D and since then hasn't looked back. He doesn't go anywhere without it and can often be found exploring the diverse countryside and coastline in North East England. On the morning of 13 February 1982, Fred and Arthur Gandolfi opened up their camera-making workshop in Peckham, south London, as usual. The brothers had been following the same routine since 1928, when their father, Louis, passed the business onto them. But this morning was to be different, as they were due to cope with the demands of an energetic team of young film-makers, as committed to creating a significant film about the workshop as the brothers were to fashioning their cameras. Wideangle images may create dramatic images but can the animal be stressed by your close proximity, even if it doesn't run away? These questions are difficult to answer and it's often very hard to decide if an animal is actually stressed by our close presence or not. If the animal moves away as you get closer that is a good clue, but some animals and birds will try to stay put and rely on their camouflage. The best advice is to take the help of someone who has experience working with your chosen species, and this might mean spending money on a one-to-one or workshop. When was the Ilkley Camera Club founded? The club was founded in 1953, when an advert seeking like-minded individuals generated a response from 20 enthusiasts. Within a short time, the club was up and running with a number of very competent photographers as members. Someone provided a projector, and a screen and projector stand were constructed.
