AMERICA is a landscape that has always been most successfully explored by outsiders. German filmmaker Wim Wenders, for example, has always been particularly good at exploring how it is we define the American Dream, where it is, and exactly how much it's going to cost. This is another fine example. French photographer Emmanuel Georges, large format camera in tow, travelled around 12,000 miles, stopping along the way in areas such as Detroit, Montana and Arkansas. What he finds are a series of recurring scenes: derelict factories, abandoned houses, broken-down cars and empty walkways. What Georges finds is not the American Dream itself, but its ghost.
