They look fabulous all year round, but are really appreciated at this time of year when there is little colour to be enjoyed outdoors. But it’s not just their good looks that make them worth growing; they are tolerant of drought, are slow growing and require virtually no maintenance.
Succulents come in many different shapes, colours and sizes. There are trailers, bushy ones, and stemless rosettes, with plants in shades of grey, green, blue, purple, bronze and near black, with some that are attractively variegated. Leaves can be smooth, hairy or armed with dangerous thorns.
