Mine was hostas - I fell hook, line and sinker for them many years ago thanks to their kaleidoscope of steely blues, forest greens, sunlit golds, creamy whites and variegated cultivars. And with exciting breeding developments continuing, my enthusiastically beating heart shows little sign of slowing!
Originating from East Asia, primarily Japan, China and Korea, hostas were also grown as a food delicacy, with tender young shoots being harvested and cooked in butter. They taste, I’m reliably informed, much like asparagus – I haven’t tried, yet!
