Seeds, seeds and more seeds!
Unless one is a compulsive propagator of plants, it is generally accepted that we are now at the start, proper, of the seed-sowing season. So, I thought we could look at some facts about seeds. However, I’ll start with ‘no seeds’!
The seeds inside oranges and grapes are, of course, the ‘pips’. But have you ever wondered why some (as well as limes), don’t have pips? How can they be grown if they don’t produce seed? Well, these seedless types are cultivated forms, grown in warmer countries and imported to Britain, and have been selected by breeders and propagated vegetatively (from grafting, cuttings or cellular micropropagation) for consistent ‘seedlessness’.
