For a garden to be furnished with interest all year round, plants which shine for a longer period, or at a time when not much else is available, should be introduced. This can be in the form of graceful grasses in autumn, architectural seed heads in winter, or long-flowering plants. One such stalwart is symphyotrichum, which flowers for long periods and helpfully bridges the gap between late summer and autumn.
Symphyotrichum are a wonderful, varied group of plants, previously found under the umbrella of aster. Several years ago, the genus was separated into a number of genera, with aster now including most European and Asian asters, while plants native to North America now belong to symphyotrichum.
