Q Over the years, we have bought several ‘dwarf’ conifers. Some, including pines, have grown bigger than we wanted, to around 8ft (2.4m), and junipers are covering the path. Should we prune them or dig them up?

A Conifers are an ancient group of long-lived and woody cone-bearing plants with needle-like leaves. With a few exceptions they are evergreen, bringing colour and interest to the garden all year round. Full-sized pines, cypresses and firs will grow into forest-sized trees, but most have dwarf versions more suited to smaller gardens.
As you have discovered, though, the term ‘dwarf’ conifer is ripe for interpretation. It would be nice to think they would grow slowly to around 4-5ft (1.2-1.5m) and then just stay there. Unfortunately, ‘dwarf’ usually just means…
