WELL, it might look a bit like a banana, but it certainly doesn’t taste like one! This vigorous perennial (Sicana odorifera) is, in fact, more closely related to a melon; indeed, this is what it smells and tastes like once it is fully ripe. Give it plenty of room in a warm spot, because this self-clinging tender vine is often allowed to scramble up trees in its native Brazil.
Treat it culturally like an annual cucumber or melon, offering plants ample water and high-potash feed throughout summer. The fruits can reach 12in (30cm) in length, and turn rusty brown once ripe.
They’ll stay firm and sound for weeks, if not months, offering an alternative to our conventional, quick-to-mature melons.
