TOBY Buckland’s column (p59) this week is championing fig trees. My late mum had one growing in her garden hedge in Hastings. It was hacked back every couple of years to contain rampant growth, and provided her in good years with bucket loads of fat and fairly tasty fruits. I took hardwood cuttings from the plant when mum died, grew one on and it’s now trained against a south facing fence in my shady garden. It’s here that an issue lies. Figs produce gloriously sweet fruits in a sun-baked Mediterranean climate. 1 Think about, and buy, late-year colour. Pansies, wallflowers, evergreens and grasses, give year-round interest. 2 Don’t let ripe crops go to waste. Pick them and eat at once (they’ll taste amazing!), or freeze, dry or pickle them. 3 Sow salads, spinach, herbs, rocket and even beetroot. WE are at the time of year where many plants have flowered, ripened, and are scattering their seeds to the winds. This is good for them, but not always ideal in a garden, where self-seeded plants can overcrowd borders and look untidy. Solve this problem by deadheading the spent blooms before they can set seed, or by deadheading and collecting seeds to sow and germinate as and where you want them to grow. Collecting and saving seeds is one of the simplest ways of propagating cheap plants. Do so on a dry, still day as soon as the seedpods ripen – you can tell they are ready, as they will change colour from green to brown. Collect them before they open and spread their contents. HMM, I thought I was being really thorough covering up my winter brassicas with fine-mesh netting to keep butterflies and birds off. True, it’s done a brilliant job of keeping cabbage white butterflies off my Brussels sprouts, kale and cauliflowers but what I didn’t bank on was a rabbit invasion. I’d anchored the edges down in places to defend against the butterflies and pigeons, but hadn’t anticipated that Mr Bunny would work his nose underneath to devour over a third of the plants in one night! So, I’m now securing the edges with wire pegs, pressing them into the earth every 1ft (30) along the netting perimeter. It feels a bit like shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted……

BECAUSE we have limited growing space in the garden, I grew this year’s potatoes in sacks. The first lot I planted were ‘Foremost’, a first early – as their name suggests. With plenty of water and regular earthing up, they grew well, with lots of healthy foliage that escaped blight. When the foliage died back in July I cut it off, and left the spuds in situ, under the soil in their sacks. This week I harvested a sack’s worth, tipping its contents into a wheelbarrow and removing the potatoes. They had kept perfectly, and those I didn’t use will be stored somewhere cool and dark indoors until needed. MANY gardeners think that you need to sow spring onion seeds in early summer, but there’s still time to get some going – if you get your skates on. Seeds sown in August will be ready for harvesting in about eight weeks, while a batch sown next month can be over-wintered to provide pickings when there’s very little else around. I chop them into salads, stir fries, omelettes and cut them lengthways to use as a garnish. A few years ago I owned an allotment, so was able to raise several rows of the piquant shoots to keep the salad bowl satisfied for the entire summer. Osteospermum ‘Serenity Bronze’ All osteospermums earn their keep but this one is a desirable warm bronzy orange. Scour garden centres now or put it on your wishlist for next year. The day before planting, ensure that all pots are well watered and the root balls are damp right though to the middle. Test this by pushing your finger into the pot. An annual application of mulch, plus tree and shrub fertiliser at the manufacturer’s recommend rates, will replenish nutrients and boost plant growth. Keep the bed free from weeds as they compete with newly planted material for space, water, light and nutrients – all of which are vital for healthy growth…

Option 1: Slow and natural Stop feeding and applying weedkiller to the lawn altogether, but mow until the grass stops growing in winter. Resume cutting in spring and continue until next autumn, making sure all clippings are removed so they can’t replenish nutrients in the soil. Dig out invasive weeds such as nettle, thistle and dock, plus any patches of coarse agricultural grasses that will compete with wildflowers. Start raising wildflowers from seed to plant out into the turf later. The following autumn, cease mowing and start planting out the perennials you’ve sown or plug plants from wildflower suppliers while the ground is still warm. ALFRESCO dining in the garden is what it’s all about towards the end of summer – but the experience can be spoiled by annoying flying insects that buzz about at best and bite at worst. “Figs provide lush green leaves, with summer pickings” SOMETIMES the way to resolve to a problem hits you right in the face. That’s certainly how I came to choose a fig tree for my front garden. I was out jogging and, as is my habit, I was peering into front gardens (only to distract from the tedium you understand). You never know what you’re going to see and, often, when stuck for a plant for a problem place, I’ll find inspiration. THE August Bank Holiday can feel like the season’s last hurrah, even though in our eccentric climate, Septembers are sometimes better than the rest of the summer put together. This weekend also gives an extra day to enjoy your garden – and get on with tackling any neglected projects. If the weather is dry, preserve wooden structures and garden furniture, or lay a paving stone path to help prevent your lawn getting churned up in wet weather. Keep on top of horticultural tasks too – tidy your borders, water and feed containers, and plant autumn-flowering varieties for late colour. • Autumn is fast approaching, and garden wildlife will soon start feeding up and searching for places to hide out and survive the colder months. • You can help many creatures by not deadheading all your plants. AS well as saving seeds, why not cut down some of your favourite flowers before they are past their best, and dry them to create attractive indoor arrangements? Some flowers preserve better than others – sunflowers, roses, sea holly, gypsophila and sea lavender (limonium) are among the best. To dry flowers, select and cut them before you would do so for a fresh display. The best time to do this is in the morning, when they are still full of moisture from the night before. Remove any foliage, divide the flowers into bunches, and tie each bunch with string. Then hang them upside-down in a ventilated, dark shed, garage or cupboard, as this stops the flowers bending towards a light source. Alternatively, standing their stems in a jar or bottle…

“It looks even better than it did at Chelsea” ONE of the plant wholesale companies staged a culinary herb garden among their flowering plant trials this summer. Every cultivar was in a container and they were pretty well all green-leaved. This display made a very refreshing sight and showed visitors how ornamental, attractive and, of course, culinary, such a small, average-front-garden size plot can be. We often see and read about planting up containers with herbs, but seldom see the follow through in the way this showpiece demonstrated so well. It is easy enough to plant up vigorous young pot grown herbs in spring and see them thrive for a few weeks with reasonable watering. I THINK it’s hard to come across a crop more generous than climbing beans. As long as you pick them regularly they crop their socks off all summer, producing pods right through until October (and often beyond). But there’s the key – you must pick them. Like so many other crops, the trick here (and it literally is a trick) is to fool your plants into thinking that they’ve not yet set seed. Allow one too many pods to become old and ‘beany’, and the plant will assume seeds are set so it no longer needs to produce more pods. If your beans have run out of steam, pick over them absolutely thoroughly, removing all but the tiniest of pods. Water and liquid feed well, and they should resume cropping…

A COUPLE of weeks ago I was up to speed with all my other gardening jobs (and there are lots of them!) at East Donyland Hall, so I rewarded myself with a sowing spell. In the earth went annual spinach, perpetual spinach, Swiss chard, Witloof chicory, carrots, beetroot, land cress and mustard. I needed to water our sandy soil well beforehand, and make sure the drills didn’t dry out before the seeds had a chance to germinate, but now I’m looking at neat little drills of seedlings. “I save up woody prunings and offcuts for charcoal” WITH any luck the weather will be kind this weekend and it’ll be great for barbecuing. This is a relatively new way of enjoying food – almost unknown before our grandparents’ time (unless they were Scouts). Australians claim they started barbecues, but actually these were a US introduction, originating from the native Americans’ firepit cooking. Whatever their origins, barbecues have become part of our great British summer. But have you considered the environmental implications: all that extra fuel, garden lighting, extra packaging – to say little of any foolishness over patio heaters? Actually it’s not so bad (with the exception of the patio heater). After all, you are at home in your garden and not expending fuel travelling somewhere else. And…

THE pot marigold is easy to grow, flowers within a couple of months from seed, is attractive to insects and has a wealth of uses. Did I forget to say the flowers are gorgeous to look at as well? Originally from Southern Europe, Calendula officinalis is sometimes described as a short-lived herbaceous perennial but mostly behaves as an annual. Sickle-shaped seeds curl prettily in the husks of old flowerheads and are easily saved and dried for future sowings. Although some varieties flower at around 9in (23cm), taller options like ‘Art Shades’ (2ft/60cm) are ideal if you want longer stems for cutting. The colours are a delicious blend of yellows, orange, apricot and cream, and although flowering can last from May to September, you’ll probably need two sowings to achieve this.…

MY honey bush (Melianthus majus) grows in a sunny spot at the bottom of the garden where it’s been sending forth shoot after shoot, clothed with large, serrated leaves that are a gorgeous bluish colour. Growth in the summer tends to be steady with a stronger flush in autumn. To encourage as much foliage as possible, I’ve decided to give it a good feed. A balanced fertiliser would be OK, but leafy specimens respond better to one with a high nitrogen content, to help produce more foliage. There are lots of different types including liquid feeds, foliage feeds and slow release granules. I’m applying sulphate of ammonia, a fertiliser in a pelleted form. I also use it on hardy bananas, tetrapanax, bamboos and ferns. Scattering the granules over the root…

I’VE been really pleased with the progress made by my ‘Dalmatie’ fig since I planted it back in April. Over the past four months or so, each arm of the fan-trained plant has extended nicely. Well, that is apart from the stem on the right side, which is lagging behind. ONE of Britain’s top stately homes, famous for its organic kitchen gardens, is boosting its horticultural offering in a bid to inspire amateur gardeners who visit. English Heritage’s Audley End House and Gardens at Saffron Waldon in Essex features gardens designed by Capability Brown that attract 160,000 visitors a year. Q I bought this plant from a supermarket in a small container, repotted it into a good sized pot, and it has grown well. What is it? Buttercup (Ranunculus acris) These small yellow flowers can be found in most wildfower meadows. The tallest and most elegant of all the buttercups, Ranunculus acris blooms from June to August. Ox-eye daisy (Leucanthemum vulgare) This cheery white-petalled daisy flower is a familiar sight across the UK. A prolific self-seeder, it blooms from May to September and looks lovely poking up through meadow grasses. Cornflower (Centaurea cyanus) Add a touch of blue with this classic wildflower, which is particularly popular with bees. It blooms from June to August and prefers light, sandy soils. Phacelia tanacetifolia Sow March to August for digging in summer and autumn, or September for digging in the following spring. Quick-growing; good for enriching all soils. Crimson clover (Trifolium incarnatum) Great for adding humus to sandy and other free-draining light soils, it also fixes nitrogen. Sow April to August and dig in before it flowers. Buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum) Deep-rooting to absorb nutrients from deep in the soil. Decomposes quickly. Sow May to August and dig in before frosts. IN good soils figs grow large, at the expense of fruits, so traditionally their planting holes are lined with concrete slabs to restrict their roots and encourage an early crop. A lightweight alternative is a 20 x 20in (50 x 50cm) ‘root-control bag’ of the type nurseries use to raise mature trees. Bury it in the ground with the top just proud of the soil but hidden under a mulch; plant the fig in the middle.…

1 If you are reusing a container, wash it well to remove debris, spent compost and any bugs, eggs and fungus spores. 2 Place crocks at the bottom for drainage, and add compost. ONE of my favourite summer plants is Pelargonium capitata, a tender, scented geranium. If you brush it as you pass, or lightly rub its foliage, it rewards you with the smell of warm roses. All pelargoniums are tender, so to keep this one alive I will need to place it somewhere frost-free, such as the greenhouse or a cool room, over the winter. If I limit its water throughout the winter, it will enter a semi-dormant state, growing little, and return to vigour when I start to water and feed it again in the spring. Keeping tender plants such as pelargoniums alive over the winter is easier to achieve in the warmer south than further north in the UK, but even here success is not guaranteed. So as a back-up…

IN my experience, African violets (saintpaulia) and cape primroses (streptocarpus) are gorgeous houseplants, but can start to look a big dog-eared after a couple of years. Luckily they are relatively easy to propagate via leaf cuttings, as I did back in early June. The leaves were inserted in damp, gritty compost, sheathed in plastic bags, and left somewhere warm and not too bright. New plantlets have started to grow from the parent leaves, and some are mature enough to transfer to their own pots, and to grow on. The streptocarpus leaves have generated clusters of healthy new plantlets along their length, and these are mature enough to move on to the next stage. AS the end of the school holidays draws near my children have their eyes set on the horse chestnut trees in the local park. They are laden with conkers, much too high to reach, but ready to fall when the time is right. Last year we timed it perfectly and went for a walk on a really windy day and raced around beneath the tree picking them up as they fell – it was great fun. My kids don’t actually have any plans for their conkers, they just like collecting them and looking for the biggest, shiniest ones. THE ‘Sturon’ onion sets, and the shallot sets, that I planted in February have grown well in their compost and manure-enriched raised bed. The wet spring and warm, dry spell in July have been ideal growing conditions for them, and this week they are just about ready to harvest. Start by gently sliding a garden fork under the bulbs, and carefully lifting them to break their roots free from the soil. Then leave them in place for around a week. This gives time for the ‘drying’ process to begin, and their leaves will start to shrivel and turn brown. They will also start to develop a layer of thin, brown, papery skin around the bulbs. WHEN my daughter was 10, she was in the garden one day eating a tomato ketchup sandwich (as you do!). Soon she was surrounded by dozens of wasps. It has given her a permanent fear of them. If you don’t swing at wasps they’ll tend to leave you alone, but they’ll still go for the sweet, sugary or fruity food you may be eating – which is why wasps get a bad press! In fact, in the early part of the growing season wasps are beneficial in the garden. They feast on many types of garden pest, from flies and aphids to caterpillars. And, just like bees, wasps do their fair share of plant pollinating. Even now, at this late stage in summer, it is too early to say whether…

YOU can’t go wrong with crocosmia for a splash of late summer colour in beds and borders. These South and East African perennials have brightly coloured blooms on tall stems that add a touch of the tropics. The one everyone knows is ‘Lucifer’, a devilishly good variety. It forms a cluster of heavily ribbed, spear-shaped leaves topped by 4ft (1.2m) tall sprays of red flowers that open in succession from slender buds arranged in a distinctive herringbone pattern on stems. It’s not the only crocosmia worth growing though. ‘Hellfire’ is slightly smaller but has larger red flowers, and Crocosmiiflora ‘Solfatare’ has bronze infused leaves that combine brilliantly well with apricot-yellow flowers. A MEMBER of a gardening club once took umbrage with me because I suggested planting Japanese anemones for a splash of autumn colour. “Why would you plant something that’s so invasive?” he asked. I replied that it wasn’t that bad and any shoots that weren’t required could be dug up. Well, I’d like to take this opportunity to apologise to him. Last year, I evicted several clumps but am paying the price for having them in the first place, as the bleedin’ things are popping up everywhere. How should I underplant conifers? Q We have a problem with a narrow area of dry soil underneath a row of conifers. What is the best course of action? Chris Prosser, Colchester A It depends on whether you wish to retain or remove the conifers. Either way, you will need to improve the soil, which will be lacking in plant nutrients, of poor structure and very dry. If the conifers are felled and the stumps removed with a stump grinder you can dig over the site, to a depth of 12-16in (30-40cm) and incorporate large amounts of well-rotted organic matter such as horse or farmyard manure, or soil conditioner. Don’t just put this in the bottom of a trench – it needs to be mixed throughout the soil to help…
