1 Buy a compost bin with a lid, stand it on bare soil, and add all types of garden waste and food scraps, cut up small or crushed if they’re big or woody.
2 Don’t add lots of one thing like grass cuttings all at once. Instead, mix things up. Water if the contents look dry. Add compost activator, or pee, if you’re so inclined.
3 When the bin is full, tip it out and shovel it back in to aerate it, or shovel it into a second bin placed alongside, or use a compost aerator, plunged in and pulled up.
4 Put the lid on and leave it for six months, checking occasionally. Speed up the process by aerating it again. It’s ready when it’s dark, crumbly and smells…
