Hardy salad leaves: Sow drills of rocket, lettuce, landcress, spinach, common purslane, claytonia (winter purslane), corn salad, endive, chicory and so on.
Carrots: Baby roots can be achieved by early spring. Choose very hardy types such as ‘Extremo’, sowing thin drills.
Brassicas: If you stumble across any transplants of spring cabbage, calabrese or cauliflower, plant now for mini-heads come the spring.
Orientals: Oriental veg such as pak choi, tatsoi, Chinese cabbage, komatsuna, choy sum, mizuna and tsoi-sim will quickly bulk up from seed.
Peas and beans: Sown into large modules, hardy peas such as ‘Douce Provence’ and broad beans such as ‘Aquadulce Claudia’ will be able to avoid winter wet.
Roots: Baby turnips, beetroot and radish sowings will produce a double-harvest: lush leafy tops followed by tender roots.
