GARDENS and zoos saw the most significant growth in visitors last year at UK attractions that open to the public.
According to VisitEngland’s Annual Attractions Survey, gardens experienced growth of eight per cent during 2016, as gardeners flocked to grand estates.
The survey of 1,545 English attractions, found that historic houses and castles experienced a seven per cent rise in visitor numbers, while parks witnessed a four per cent increase.
Kew Gardens led the way, with visitor numbers rising from 1,622,821 in 2015 to 1,828,956 in 2016. The Royal Horticultural Society’s garden at wisley was a star performer, too, with attendance soaring from 1,087,927 to 1,135,976 during the same period.
