Q I have a raised bed, about 10ft (3m) square, and I want to turn it into an alpine bed, with some rocks placed strategically. Which evergreen alpine plants can I use?

A There are lots of really beautiful evergreen plants that are low-growing, and which should be ideal for this situation.
They include: houseleek (sempervivum), sea thrift (armeria, above), gentian, stonecrop (Sedum acre), the donkey-tail spurge (Euphorbia myrsinities), alpine dianthus, saxifrage, aubrieta, thyme, arenaria, dionysia, alpine phlox, moss campion (Silene acaulis), Arabis caucasica, rock jasmine (androsace) and perennial candytuft (iberis).
This is only a small selection of what is possible, and a visit to the website of an alpine nursery would give you many more choices.
