Q I love dahlias but have never grown them before. Where should I start?
Gail Lloyd, Whitehaven, Cumbria
A There are all sorts of flower shapes, colours, and types now available. Dahlias can be grown in window boxes, as bedding, in borders, and may even be grown for exhibiting.
They need well-drained soil that contains some organic matter, and a sunny, frost-free site out of strong winds.
Generally, the bedding types are the easiest to grow, but if you want a challenge try growing some of the varieties suitable for the purpose of exhibiting.
They may be raised from seed or dormant tubers, or you can buy the plants, already growing, from a garden centre or nursery.
