I was recently ticked o? by one of my club's older members for ‘boasting' in Airgun Shooter about a good 25-yard benchrest result. He claimed it was the reason I'd shot a disappointingly below-par score the following month.
“Pride comes before a fall in this game,” he said. “You shouldn't boast about a 5,000 score.”
“But it wasn't 5,000,” I protested. “It was 4,900. I've never shot a 5,000.”
“Oh, haven't you? I have. Many times,” he responded.
“But it still doesn't do to boast?” I countered.
“That's right,” he nodded.
“Okay,” I said. “Point noted.”
When I was a nipper, it was drilled into me that I mustn't be a boastful bighead. I think it was common at the time. It was the 1970s, and things had moved on…
