A personal perspective: My introduction to mountaineering came when my teenage daughter, expressed her goal of one day summiting Mount Everest. We began this journey while she was still young; at 15 years old, we trekked to Everest Base Camp. During this trek, we started to investigate what it would take to train and prepare for a summit of the highest mountain on Earth. Initially, it felt like an insurmountable task, but as we gained more experience and skills at greater altitudes, our belief in ourselves solidified. Our journey progressed with progressively higher climbs, and our first 8000m summit was on Cho Oyu in Tibet in September 2019. In 2015, while riding her mountain bike in a friend’s backyard, Debs had a mishap. It wasn’t a dramatic crash, but she hit the ground hard and the bike struck the back of her head, helmet on. Initially cleared by a GP despite seeing stars, it was a specialist recommended by her job at Cycling New Zealand who detected potential issues. Although an MRI didn’t reveal a brain bleed, there was significant bruising. Recovery was a gruelling journey. The first few months confined her to a dark room with debilitating headaches. Sexual inequality and harassment have deep roots in every sporting discipline, and the outdoor industry is not excluded, some of which we have witnessed ourselves. Starting in 2005, alongside Adventure Magazine, Pacific Media also produced a women’s surf magazine called Curl for over ten years. Throughout that journey, we were to experience what women have had to endure in male-dominated sports for decades. There are so many examples. Early in Curl’s history, during a National Surfing New Zealand competition, the sponsor paid more money to the bikini contest winner ($1000) than it did to the female who won the surf competition! The Hunua Ranges are a 14,000-hectare regional park at the Southeast border of Auckland. One Hours drive from the CBD, this park holds a myriad of trails for the trail running enthusiast.
