That’s why William Wei, a history professor at the University of Colorado Boulder, dreamed up the Colorado Encyclopedia (coloradoencyclopedia.org), a website that posts academic-approved accounts of the Centennial State’s past. Funded by a National Endowment for the Humanities grant and the State Historical Fund, the site goes live this month with 500 articles about everything from Denver founder William Larimer Jr. to our state’s history of lynchings. The idea for associate editor Chris Outcalt’s “The Craft Conundrum” (page 96) came about like so many good ideas do: over a beer. At a bar one evening with some of his fellow 5280 staffers, Outcalt wondered aloud about whether the wild growth of small craft breweries in Denver was sustainable. When other four-year-olds were getting training wheels, Sean Thomas was training on a motorcycle. At 12, the Firestone resident became the youngest Coloradan to earn a motorcycle roadracing license. Now, Thomas is wrapping up his second season of semi-pro racing—just in time to start his freshman year at Frederick High School. Only 14, Thomas competes against racers a decade his senior in Colorado and Utah, where riders hit speeds of up to 108 mph. Thomas proved he was more than a novelty act last year by winning an amateur race in Utah against adults. AARON COLUSSI Photographer Fort Collins freelance photographer Aaron Colussi has shot 5280’s annual home entertaining spread—a photo-heavy feature highlighting recipes from local chefs and bartenders—since 2014. It’s rained every time, and this year’s shoot for “A Late Summer Night’s Dream” (page 86) was no exception. Fortunately, the precipitation didn’t start falling until Colussi was wrapping up. I f the light is just right in the Colorado Springs warehouse that hosts Distillery 291’s tasting room, distillery, bottling facility, and barrel room, you might be able to see the clouds—that is, the billowing shapes that are etched into the side of Michael Myers’ 45-gallon copper still.
