When electric longboards first debuted several years ago, Mike Maloney was skeptical. The founder of Denver’s Knights Of The Air (KOTA) Longboards had staked his reputation on building boards that were as stylish as they were rideable. An electric motor on the bottom of the deck, he feared, would diminish the board’s meticulous design and the quality of its ride. In November 2017, Maloney proved himself wrong. Just before Thanksgiving, KOTA launched its first electric board, the Spitfire Mk V ($1,299), a sleek, smooth ride that Maloney has struggled to keep in stock ever since. Got a young’un who’s already aching to share her brilliant ideas with the folks at Techstars? There’s a camp for that: the Creators’ Camp in Lakewood. The weeklong event is essentially a mini tech accelerator that helps kids ages seven to 12 determine what they’re good at and passionate about—and how they could build companies that use those skills to solve the world’s thorniest problems. The 29.4-mile, five-day trek begins at 10,676-foot Last Dollar Pass near Telluride, winds its way through the Mt. Sneffels Wilderness, and ends in the quaint town of Ouray. RULE NUMBER ONE about traveling in the backcountry with your children: They do not carry their own weight. Rule number two about traveling in the backcountry with your children: The one thing you don’t bring will inevitably be the one thing your kids need. I was reminded of these axioms late last summer, when I took my two boys, Sebastian and Leo, to North Fork Canadian Yurt in State Forest State Park.
