As with many of the organic, healthy—and ideally local—foodstuffs that have become de rigueur in the past few years, the grain bowl appears as if it’s here to stay. It’s infinitely customizable; you can eat one at any time of the day (put an egg on it at breakfast!); and, as the grain bowl at Punch Bowl Social on Broadway proves, it can be perfectly delicious. ¶ Punch Bowl’s version arrives with quinoa and lightly fried farro ringed with leafy kale, paper-thin radishes, tangled alfalfa sprouts, pickled chiles, and roasted carrots and shiitake mushrooms. The Fine Print: For years, ski areas have printed release-ofliability language on lift tickets and season passes purchased onmountain. However, state courts have rejected the notion that such language inherently shields ski resorts from claims. In contrast, the purchase of lift tickets online often involves clicking a box acknowledging a more thorough release, which generally is enforceable against claims. (That is, unless a claim arises from the ski area’s failure to live up to certain duties of care outlined in legislation like the Colorado Ski Safety Act.) Furthermore, the purchase of a season pass also involves agreement to an extensive waiver and release that usually can be used to bar the making of a claim. THE LITTLE ENGINE THAT COULD The Union Pacific Railroad Co. donated a key to the City of Denver train in 1936 after it made its first journey from Denver to Chicago. While Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, and the Who were all busy playing with their lasers, Westminster artist Dorothy Tanner was inventing a different kind of light show. In the ’60s, together with her late husband, Mel, the now 93-year-old created an artistic style known as Lumonics, a technique that involves LED-lit abstract sculptures backed by soundtracks that add to the display’s mood. Lumonics soon took off, and the Tanners brought the art form with them, often collaborating with theater troupes and musicians, when they moved to places as far-flung as Miami and Maine. Several years after Mel died, Dorothy moved to Colorado, where she opened Lumonics Light & Sound Gallery at Tanner Studio. “Palm trees and flatlands become boring after a while,” she says. Which attorneys did you survey? All licensed attorneys in the sevencounty metro area were welcome to participate in our survey, which went live on 5280.com in May. We mailed postcards to nearly 16,000 licensed attorneys actively registered with the Colorado Supreme Court’s Office of Attorney Regulation Counsel and reached out to local bar associations to make sure we received a strong response to the peer-review ballot. If you get nabbed for a traffic violation… You are very unlikely to get anywhere by pleading your case to the officer. Instead, it’s wisest to be quiet and polite. The less said, the better. It’s also important to note that you do not have the right to request to see your radar gun reading if you are pulled over for exceeding the posted speed limit. If you run into a DUI checkpoint… Sobriety checkpoints are roadblocks set up by law enforcement officers to check drivers for signs of impairment. Colorado law requires there be signage warning of the checkpoint in a location where drivers can still maneuver to avoid it. Long before tourists came to Colorado to devour edibles with enough THC to stun a steer (just eat half, man), visitors flocked to Denver for the National Western Stock Show. Established in 1906, the 16-day Western extravaganza—which this year begins on January 7 and features everything from a rodeo to an art exhibit—still attracts more than 686,000 attendees a year. What’s the best way to join the herd, city slicker? Start by replacing those skinny jeans and Vans with some Colorado-bred cowboy gear. WIFE STRIFE Cody and his wife, Louisa Frederici, made for great tabloid fodder. With rumored infidelities (Cody’s), alleged attempted poisonings (Fred- erici’s), and the housekeeper reporting that Cody said he had to “get drunk and stay drunk” to tolerate his wife, the pair wasn’t exactly the picture of wedded bliss. Cody filed for divorce in 1904 after 38 years of marriage, but the judge denied his request. COME TO A (FORE) CLOSE In 1913, Cody borrowed money from Harry Tammen, co-owner of the Denver Post. Although it’s not a Chinese tradition, ending a meal of sesame chicken or lo mein with a fortunefilled cookie is a rite of passage at Chinese-American restaurants across the country. Rob Katz’s home base is an expansive glass-walled area on the 10th floor of the corporation’s LEED-certified building in Broomfield. The misconception: Employers can legally bar their employees from discussing wages with their co-workers. The reality: For decades, state and federal employment laws have prohibited employers from requiring employees (who don’t handle payroll or work in supervisory positions) to sign documents that prohibit them from discussing wage information. Thus, employees are free to compare their salaries with those of co-workers. These laws also generally forbid employers from retaliating—through increased scrutiny, verbal abuse, or firing— against employees who share such financial information. The misconception: If an employee in Colorado can prove the reason he was fired was false, that person is legally entitled to his former job.
